Robots and Root Canal: How Tech is Changing The Life of a Mill Valley Dentist (and Maybe Yours Too)

If you told me ten years ago that I’d be seriously considering bringing a humanoid robot into my home, I probably would’ve laughed, tightened my ponytail, and headed out to the track. But here we are—2025—and between running a full-time dental practice, tuning my race car for the weekend, and trying to keep up with my two boys, the idea is… oddly appealing.

It’s not that I’m overwhelmed—I’ve always been good at juggling. But when I read a recent article about how close we are to consumer-ready humanoid robots, I paused. What if a robot really could help lighten the load? Not the kind that drills teeth (don’t worry), but the kind that folds laundry, preps meals, or reminds me I left my coffee in the microwave—again.

From the Pit Lane to the Kitchen

Companies like Figure AI and Tesla are rolling out prototypes of home-use robots capable of doing more than vacuuming under the sofa. We’re talking basic food prep, carrying items, tidying the house, and eventually, deeper integration with smart home systems. The idea is that these machines could one day help manage the more repetitive, time-sucking parts of modern life.

And I’m not immune to that fantasy. Like a lot of moms, I’ve caught myself daydreaming about someone—something—handling the logistics so I can be more present where it matters most.

What’s funny is, as I was thinking about this idea at home, I realized I’ve already embraced robotics in another area of my life: my dental practice.

Robotic Dentistry is Already Here

In the dental world, technology has become a quiet co-pilot. Systems like Yomi, a robotic surgical assistant, are being used to aid in placing dental implants with extreme precision. No, it’s not a robot doing surgery while I’m off sipping a cappuccino—it’s a guided system that enhances what I do, ensuring better outcomes with less invasiveness.

And that’s the point: these technologies aren’t here to replace us—they’re here to support us.

Whether it’s in the kitchen or the clinic, the robot’s role isn’t to take over. It’s to make room—for better focus, greater accuracy, and yes, a little more peace of mind.

The Track Taught Me This

When I race, everything is about precision and support. Sensors monitor tire pressure, telemetry tells me how the car is performing in real-time, and every adjustment is meant to help me stay fast and safe. The tools don’t replace me as the driver—they give me better control.

Dentistry isn’t so different. Neither is life at home.

But Robots Can’t Do This…

As much as I love tech, I’m also deeply human. I love catching a glimpse of my boys cracking up in the other room. I enjoy making dinner on a random Wednesday just because I found great local produce. And I love connecting with my patients—especially those who are nervous or haven’t been to the dentist in years. That look of relief when they realize it wasn’t as bad as they expected? A robot can’t deliver that.

The warmth, the reassurance, the quiet understanding—those things don’t come with software updates. Like the way I’ll peek in on my youngest while he’s carefully constructing an insanely complex Star Wars LEGOs. There’s a rhythm to those quiet family moments that no robot can replicate—and I wouldn’t trade them for anything.

A Funny Thought About Toothbrushes

I sometimes wonder: if I got a home robot, would it remind my boys to brush properly? Maybe even floss? I’m not holding my breath—but if that upgrade ever gets released, I’ll be first in line.

Until then, that job (along with most others) still falls to me. But I don’t mind. Because just like in dentistry, I don’t believe in handing off what matters most. I believe in smart systems that help me show up better—at work, at home, and yes, on the racetrack.

Why This Matters to You

If you’re reading this and thinking, “What does a home robot have to do with my teeth?”—you’re not alone. But here’s the thing: when technology lightens the load, we’re freer to care for ourselves. When precision tools help us do things better and faster, we spend less time recovering and more time living.

That’s why I invest in top-tier dental technology. That’s why I’ve embraced innovations like digital scanning and laser dentistry. It’s not because I love gadgets—it’s because I love people. And I want their experience to be calm, comfortable, and efficient.

So maybe the idea of a home robot isn’t that different from the idea of a laser-assisted cavity filling. It’s just another step toward supporting the best version of ourselves.

For Now, It’s Still Me

No robot’s taking over my kitchen. Or my dental chair. Or my pit crew. Not yet, anyway. But I’ll admit—I’m intrigued.

I’m watching this space closely, not just because I love tech, but because I believe in anything that helps us live with more intention, more efficiency, and a little more breathing room.

And if my future includes a robot that reminds me where I left my phone and picks up dry cleaning? Well, I’ll save it a seat at the dinner table.

With curiosity (and coffee in hand).
