Relief From Snoring #Snoring #FHYankieDDS #MillValley

As the temperatures drop in Mill Valley, our cozy rituals begin—fireplaces crackling, socks doubling up, hot drinks in hand, and for many… louder-than-usual snoring. Yes, snoring tends to worsen in colder months. As a family and cosmetic dentist, I often hear about it—not just from patients, but from the very people trying to sleep next to my patients.

There’s a good reason this happens. Cold air and dry heat from indoor furnaces can irritate and dry out nasal and throat tissues, leading to increased airway resistance. For some, this creates the perfect storm: inflammation, congestion, and that classic nighttime rumble.

But here’s the good news: if snoring—or even mild sleep apnea—is part of your winter soundtrack, there’s a gentle, non-invasive solution that I proudly offer at my Mill Valley office: Fotona’s NightLase® therapy.

What many people don’t realize is that disrupted sleep from snoring or breathing irregularities doesn’t just affect your mood—it affects your metabolism, too. Poor-quality sleep can lead to an increase in cortisol, the body’s primary stress hormone. Elevated cortisol levels have been directly linked to weight gain, particularly around the midsection, and can make it harder for your body to regulate appetite, blood sugar, and immune function. In other words: snoring might be causing more than just tension in your household—it may be throwing off your overall health balance.

So, What Is NightLase®?

NightLase® is an innovative laser treatment that reduces snoring and the symptoms of sleep apnea by gently tightening tissues in the throat. Unlike bulky CPAP machines or surgery, this treatment is completely non-invasive and requires no downtime.

The technology behind it is both fascinating and effective. Fotona’s patented Er:YAG laser gently heats the oral mucosa tissue—specifically the soft tissue in your throat and upper airway. The process begins with denaturation of old collagen in the pharyngeal region, which then stimulates the natural production of fresh collagen. The result? A tightening effect in the throat’s mucosal tissue, creating more space in the airway.

More space = less resistance = less snoring.

I like to tell my patients: this isn’t about muffling snoring; it’s about treating its root cause.

Why It’s Perfect for Winter

During colder months, our airways take a beating. Cold air is naturally drier, and when we crank up indoor heating, the air becomes even more dehydrating. This combination leads to irritation and inflammation in the nasal and throat passages—especially at night, when we breathe through our mouths. As a result, snoring often becomes louder and more frequent in the winter.

Colder weather also contributes to more frequent upper respiratory infections, nasal congestion, and reduced airflow, which can all amplify snoring. In some cases, snoring evolves into what’s known as cold-induced or positional apnea, where shallow or interrupted breathing patterns cause fragmented sleep.

This disruption in sleep is more than just a nightly annoyance—it affects your entire health. Fragmented or poor-quality sleep can lead to increased cortisol production (a stress hormone), which has been linked to weight gain, mood imbalances, and even weakened immunity. Your body interprets poor sleep as a form of stress, and that chronic stress response has very real physical effects.

What makes NightLase® especially ideal this time of year is that it’s:

  • Gentle – Safe for the sensitive tissue inside the mouth
  • Effective – High success rate in reducing or eliminating snoring
  • Non-invasive – No scalpels, no anesthesia, no downtime
  • Convenient – Usually performed in a series of short in-office sessions

So instead of investing in another white-noise machine or sleeping with a pillow over your head, it may be time to address the issue head-on—with something that actually works—by improving your airway health and supporting deeper, uninterrupted sleep.

But Is It Safe?

Absolutely. Fotona’s Er:YAG laser technology has been extensively studied and used in various medical applications for decades. In the hands of a trained dental provider (hi, that’s me), NightLase® is not only safe—it’s one of the most comfortable and low-risk options available for addressing snoring and mild sleep apnea.

Many of my patients describe it as warm and soothing. Some even doze off during treatment (which feels like a pretty solid endorsement, don’t you think?).

When Should You Consider It?

NightLase® is ideal if:

  • You snore regularly (especially in winter)
  • Your partner complains about your snoring (or you’ve been exiled to the couch)
  • You wake up tired, even after a full night’s sleep
  • You’ve tried nasal strips, mouthguards, or CPAP and want a simpler option
  • You’ve noticed worsening symptoms in colder months

Even better: NightLase® can be paired with other lifestyle changes like better sleep positioning, avoiding alcohol before bed, and humidifying your room for even better results.

Ready to Breathe Easier—and Quieter?

Snoring might be common, but it doesn’t have to be permanent. And it certainly shouldn’t steal your sleep (or your relationship harmony).

If you or someone you love is struggling with snoring, especially during these dry, cold winter months, let’s talk. I offer personalized consultations to see if NightLase® therapy is right for you. It’s a simple, science-backed solution that could change the way you sleep—and live.

Wishing you a peaceful, snore-free winter,

Dr. Frances H. Yankie, DDS
